SUMMARY:Exploiting FPGA Accelerators for Lattice Boltzmann Simulations usi
 ng Directive-Based Programming Models
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nComputer Science and Applied Mathematics, Emerg
ing Application Domains, Chemistry and Materials, Climate and Weather, Phy
sics, Solid Earth Dynamics, Life Sciences, Engineering\n\nExploiting FPGA
Accelerators for Lattice Boltzmann Simulations using Directive-Based Progr
amming Models\n\nCalore\n\nIn this talk we present early attempts in progr
amming FPGA using high-level directive-based programming models to acceler
ate Lattice Boltzmann simulations. The activities presented in this contri
bution are based on the experience developed within the EuroEXA project, f
unded by the EU in the framework of the H2020 programme. The project targe
ts to provide the template for an upcoming exascale system, co-designing a
nd implementing a petascale-level prototype, embedding FPGA accelerators.
In particular, we focus on fluid-dynamics simulations using a code based o
n Lattice Boltzmann Methods which correctly reproduces the thermo-hydrodyn
amical equations of motions of a fluid and automatically enforces the equa
tion of state of a perfect gas. Selected kernels of this application have
been annotated using the OmpSs programming model, and offloaded on FPGAs u
sing the OpmSs@FPGA extension. We present early results of this activity i
n terms of achieved performances, discussing also the challenges faced dur
 ing the porting process.
