SUMMARY:A New Generation of Earth Mantle Model Based on Adjoint Tomography
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nSolid Earth Dynamics\n\nA New Generation of Ear
th Mantle Model Based on Adjoint Tomography\n\nRuan, Lei, Lefebvre, Smith,
Modrak...\n\nHigh-resolution images of the rising mantle plumes and subdu
cting slabs are key to understand the dynamics of earth interior. To overc
ome resolvability limits of the traditional ray-theoretical body- and surf
 ace-wave tomography, we use a spectral-element method (GPU-accelerated SPE
CFEM3D_GLOBE) to accurately simulate seismograms in complex 3-D earth mode
ls and adjoint-state method to iteratively minimize the difference between
simulated waveforms and observations to constrain the model. The challeng
e of this computationally intensive method lies that a tremendous amount o
f data I/O and a well-organized workflow are required to simulate and proc
ess the large seismic dataset iteration after iteration. We have dealt wit
h the I/O bottleneck by developing the Adaptable Seismic Data Format (ASDF
) and parsimonious storage algorithm and introduced workflow management to
ols. Harnessing the power of the Cray XK7 supercomputer “Titan&rdquo
; at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, we have assimilated &sim
;17 million waveform data from 1,480 carefully selected earthquakes. We co
nstructed a new generation of transversely isotropic earth mantle model wi
th fine-scale features of mantle plumes and slabs, even in areas with rela
tively sparse data coverage. We will present a summary of the technical im
provements we made and the latest inversion results based on our current m
 odel, GLAD_M25.
