SUMMARY:Large-Scale GPU Matrix Computing of Discrete Element Method
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nSolid Earth Dynamics\n\nLarge-Scale GPU Matrix
Computing of Discrete Element Method\n\nLiu\n\nHPC technology has been wid
ely used in earth science numerical simulation, such as imaging, molecular
dynamics of mineral, geodynamics, etc. Most of the numerical simulations
are based on continuous methods. However, many geological processes involv
e discontinuous processes, failure and large deformation, such as faulting
, tectonic movement. For the discontinuous numerical methods, such as the
discrete element method (DEM), it is very hard to build a matrix for paral
lel computing, because the neighbors of each element may be changed freque
ntly during the simulation. By introducing a virtual element and a filter
matrix, we proposed a new GPU matrix computing technology for DEM. A new s
oftware MatDEM was developed based on the technology, which may handle mil
lions of elements in one computer, 30 times more than current commercial s
oftware. It is share online now http://matdem.com. The technology provides
a new way for parallel computing of discontinuous methods.
