SUMMARY:Computational and Analytics Facility Needs and Co-Scheduling at th
 e Cross-Facility Interface
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nComputer Science and Applied Mathematics, Emerg
ing Application Domains, Chemistry and Materials\n\nComputational and Anal
ytics Facility Needs and Co-Scheduling at the Cross-Facility Interface\n\n
Alam, Wells, Shankar\n\nPeering facilities need to address concerns of app
ortioning of functional services that operate on data and execute computat
ional models at each site. The interface across the facilities must be &ld
quo;co-scheduled” to be aware of the HPC capabilities, and also enab
le the observational data science requirements. At the Oak Ridge Leadershi
p Computing Facility (OLCF) and peered facilities like the Spallation Neut
ron Source (SNS) and Center for Nanophase Materials Science (CNMS), we dep
loy an interfacing infrastructure to support the data backplane and the co
ntrol and coordination needs. Built using cloud-ecosystem technologies inc
luding deployable containers and VMs and their orchestration, persistent s
ervices are deployed that enable databases, analytics notebooks, and workf
lows. This talk also provides an overview of interactive, on-demand and be
spoke services on Piz Daint supercomputing platform, which is a hybrid and
heterogenous Petascale computing system. These services include Jupyter n
otebooks, the Swiss Institute of Particle Physics the Swiss portion of the
Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) middleware, community platforms for t
he European Human Brain Project (HBP), and real-time extreme data workflow
s for the large-scale experimental facilities such as the Swiss Light Sour
ce (SLS) and the free-electron X-ray laser SwissFEL at the Paul Scherrer I
 nstitute (PSI).
