SUMMARY:Urgent Supercomputing for Earthquake Hazard Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nSolid Earth Dynamics\n\nUrgent Supercomputing f
or Earthquake Hazard Assessment\n\nde la Puente, Monterrubio\n\nEarthquake
s can cause devastating effects and result in terrible losses, both human
and economical. Simulating their effects with 3D software is common practi
ce. By modelling scenarios we can either study past events or forecast the
impact of hypothetical ones. Nevertheless, the setup is time consuming an
d the computations are intensive in terms of resources. In order to make a
n impact for civil protection we can try to simulate events shortly after
they happen in order to obtain high-resolution affectation maps. Neverthel
ess, in order to be useful in damage assessment, simulations must attain f
requencies that are relevant to assess the integrity of buildings. Further
more, results must be attained in a very short time, preferably a few hour
s after the earthquake occurs. By means of automated triggering and urgent
computing protocols, we aim at enabling the largest supercomputers in Eur
ope as hosts for urgent supercomputing simulations of earthquakes. This pr
oject is under development under the ChEESE Center of Excellence
(https://cheese-coe.eu/), grant agreement n° 823844.
