SUMMARY:Guidelines and Environment to Support Sustainable Software Develop
 ment at DLR
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nComputer Science and Applied Mathematics, Engin
eering\n\nGuidelines and Environment to Support Sustainable Software Devel
opment at DLR\n\nSchlauch, Haupt\n\nResearch software is often developed b
y scientists who are domain experts. Most of them have no specific educati
on in software development. At the German Aerospace Center (DLR), we start
ed an initiative for better research software to help scientists developin
g and sustaining their software. The central elements of the initiative ar
e practical software development guidelines and the establishment of a sup
portive environment. The guidelines describe the desired development pract
ice. The environment is established with this practice in mind and consist
s of offers such as central tools, training, and opportunities for knowled
ge exchange. Both elements are further developed by a joint community at D
LR. In this talk, we briefly introduce the guidelines and the environment
for research software developers at DLR. Particularly, we focus on the min
imum practice imposed by the guidelines and show the interplay between gui
delines and environment. Concretely, we present the concept of our new tra
ining. It connects the minimum practice with the usage of our GitLab-based
software development collaboration platform on the basis of hands-on exer
cises. Finally, we share our experience with the training which has been t
aken by about 100 participants so far.
