SUMMARY:Pangeo: The State of the Art at NCAR & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nClimate and Weather\n\nPangeo: The State of the
Art at NCAR & Beyond\n\nPaul, Banihirwe, Kent, Hamman, Long\n\nPangeo is
an international, open source collaboration dedicated to the advancement o
f scalable, interactive, easy-to-use data analysis for the climate and wea
ther community. First and foremost, Pangeo is a community&n
bsp;that promotes open, reproducible, and scalable science. &nbs
p;This community provides documentation, develops and maintains software,
and deploys computing infrastructure to make scientific research and progr
amming easier. The Pangeo software ecosystem involves open source tools su
ch as xarray, iris, dask, jupyter, and many other packages. This pre
sentation presents the current state of the Pangeo community and the capab
ilities of the Pangeo software ecosystem for analyzing large datasets inte
ractively. These results will be primarily presented from the perspe
ctive of the presenter's instutition (National Center for Atmospheric Rese
arch, Boulder, Colorado, USA), but will describe advancements provided by
the community as a whole. Some of these results include the deployme
nt of a Pangeo-capable Jupyter Hub on NCAR's supercomputing system, Cheyen
ne, and benchmarking efforts to show scalability of the platform on large
NetCDF and Zarr datasets. This presentation will also cover how NCAR
contributes to the Pangeo-community as a whole, and how you and other ins
titutions can contribute in a similar way, such as through involvement in
Pangeo Hackathons.
