SUMMARY:Computational Challenges of Interactive Analytics with Dask and Xa
 rray
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nComputer Science and Applied Mathematics, Clima
te and Weather, Engineering\n\nComputational Challenges of Interactive Ana
lytics with Dask and Xarray\n\nRocklin\n\nThis talk discusses the performa
nce capabilities and challenges of interactive analytics of earth system d
ata, particularly when using the Scientific Python ecosystem. We include a
brief overview of computational libraries like NumPy, Xarray, and Dask fo
r scalable array computing, summarize the relevant performance bottlenecks
, and then walk through a couple common classes of computations live, whil
e looking at performance diagnostics. Finally we will discuss how measurin
g the performance of interactive data analytics differs somewhat from typi
cal high performance computing in that we are often bound by data access a
nd user interaction rather than pure FLOPs, and we measure success by time
-to-insight and responsiveness rather than strict walltime.
