SUMMARY:Towards Exascale Gyrokinetic Modeling of Fusion Plasmas with the G
 ENE Code
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nPhysics\n\nTowards Exascale Gyrokinetic Modelin
g of Fusion Plasmas with the GENE Code\n\nMerlo, Jenko\n\nUltimately aimin
g at developing a validated predictive capability for fusion plasmas, coup
ling codes addressing the physics in respectively the core and boundary pl
asma regions can provide the backbone for a virtual fusion machine. Using
the Eulerian gyrokinetic GENE, we will present the challenges of such an a
pproach and investigate possible coupling strategies allowing for driven t
urbulence simulations, including kinetic electrons. The success of the exa
scale initiative will eventually depend on the capability of codes to effe
ctively exploit exascale platforms and architectures. Algorithmic changes
need to be considered together with programming models in order to fully e
xploit such machines. Due to the different time scales, electron sub-cycli
ng is a technique known to potentially leading to strong improvements. We
will discuss its implementation in GENE and the consequences on performanc
e.<br />We acknowledge the ECP-WDMApp team for discussion and support. Thi
s research was supported by the Exascale Computing Project (17-SC-20-SC),
a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science
and the National Nuclear Security Administration.
