SUMMARY:Insights on Parallel Computing and its Challenges in Macroeconomic
 s
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\nEmerging Application Domains\n\nInsights on Par
allel Computing and its Challenges in Macroeconomics\n\nZarruk\n\nParallel
computing opens the door to solving and estimating richer models in econo
mics. From dynamic optimization problems with high dimensionality to struc
tural estimation with complex data, readily-available and economical paral
lel computing allows researchers to tackle problems in economics that were
beyond the realm of possibility just a decade ago. This talk describes th
e basics of parallel computing, its main implementation challenges, and pr
ovides useful guidance to improve performance at a low cost, through tools
such as OpenMP and OpenACC. Performance gains of different parallelizatio
n routines are compared using as a test bed a standard life-cycle model su
ch as those used in macro and labor.
