SUMMARY:IK03 - Flexibly Scalable High Performance Architectures with Embed
ded Photonics
DESCRIPTION:Keynote, Plenary\nComputer Science and Applied Mathematics\n\n
IK03 - Flexibly Scalable High Performance Architectures with Embedded Phot
onics\n\nBergman\n\nComputing systems are critically challenged to meet th
e performance demands of applications particularly driven by the explosive
growth in data analytics. Data movement, dominated by energy costs and li
mited ‘chip-escape’ bandwidth densities, is a key physical lay
er roadblock to these systems’ scalability. Integrated silicon photo
nics with deeply embedded optical connectivity is on the cusp of enabling
revolutionary data movement and extreme performance capabilities. Beyond a
lleviating the bandwidth/energy bottlenecks, embedded photonics can enable
new disaggregated architectures that leverage the distance independence o
f optical transmission. We will discuss how the envisioned modular system
interconnected by a unified photonic fabric can be flexibly composed to cr
eate custom architectures tailored for specific applications.

V
